On the October 9, 2017, episode of Dancing with the Stars, each of the stars was supposed to do a dance from their “most memorable year.”

Frankie Muniz surprised everyone when he said 2017 was his year of choice, but his explanation stunned them even more.

He said:

I would say my most memorable year is this year. It’s really a culmination of everything I’ve done, which has led me to be in the position I am today where I can help others follow their dreams.

Most people would think that my most memorable year would be the year ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ started, because it allowed me to live all these dreams of mine. I’ve gotten to really do anything I’ve wanted to do, but the truth is I don’t really remember much of that.

It almost feels like it wasn’t me. There’s no negative feelings, I just don’t necessarily remember.

I’m not actually sure how my memory loss started. I’ve had nine concussions, I’ve had a fair amount of mini strokes, TIAs — transient ischemic attacks.

I’m not saying that those things correlate exactly to the reason why my memory’s not great, but you know, I guess if you think about it, it could be.

When his dance partner, Whitney Carson, asked what doctors say about his condition, Frankie revealed that he’d never asked his doctors about it.

“To be honest,” he said, “I’ve never really talked about it.”

He continued:

My girlfriend, Paige, writes every single day what we did, because I love to be able to look back.

It makes me a little sad that it doesn’t just pop back into my mind, you know, like I should’ve remembered going to Australia — that’s something that people remember.

My most memorable year is 2017, because I learned to live in the present.

I’m happy with my acting career, I’m happy with the decision I made to go race cars and to focus on music. Even if I don’t remember it all, I’m happy.

His TV dad, Bryan Cranston, said in the video:

Frankie was a television star, then he became a race car driver and a drummer in a rock band.

I said to him once, I said, “What, are you going to be — an astronaut next? You’re doing all the things professionally that everybody dreams about.”

I told him not to remember about what you remember and what you don’t remember. They’re still your experiences.

It’ll be my job, I will tell him, “Remember this, remember that on ‘Malcolm’? What a life for you.”
